Teach your Dog to Leave it Alone

We all have this issue with our dogs. They find things and they want to play with it. Well, this issue is, they have to know what that’s OK for and what is off-limits. For this, you want to be able to show them what is good and not good.

Treat Training

This must be done with extreme patients and with vigilance for a period of time daily.
Step 1: Place a treat in your hand.

Step 2: Then make a fist with the treat inside and allow the dog to lick and sniff as much as he wants.

Step 3. As soon as they naturally back up then loudly state GOOD JOB! and give the treat over.

Step 4. Repeat several times. You can even get a cheap clicker or manual counter that makes that clicking sound. Click when they back off and give the treat.

Step 5 : Raise the bar. Once you are sure they are good at backing off and not snapping at the treat you raise the bar.

Step: 6 place the treat on the floor and now say leave it. As you say leave it use the clicker if you have it. If you don’t just put your hand over the treat. You may want to start with the hand over the treat on the floor for a more difficult dog. Then when he backs off say loudly GOOD JOB! and give him the treat.

This works and just needs patients to happen.

Teach Dog To Limp

Step 1: Beginning

To begin, place a leash on the dog. This will allow more control during the duration of the lesson and is also used as a teaching tool for the dog. Basically, you are using the leash to teach.

Step 2: Setup

Now that the dog has been placed on a leash take leash and elevate the wrist by tying a loop around the foreleg then slightly pulling the leash until the dogs leg is elevated. Now the training begins.

Step 3: Commands

After tying the leash to the dog’s foreleg take a few steps back with enough space to allow the dog to come to you and call out to the dog to limp over to you. “Here boy, limp”.

Step 4: Resistance

Should the dog not be taking to the trick/lesson and not want to obey the command one easy remedy is to have a secondary person by holding the dog’s leg and collar as you relay the commands.

Step 5: Leeway

In this step you will want to grant the dog a reward for obeying all commands properly by loosening the reins on the leash all the while requesting that the dog walk further when the limp command is called.

Step 6: Additional ideas

If it is evident that the dog is understanding and obeying all called out commands it is time to take the dog off the leash and try the command once more. Additionally, make a sling and tie the sling to the dog’s collar.
